One of our rarest resins we offer! Boswellia Socotrana is imported from the Island of Socotra, off the coast of Yemen in the Indian ocean. This species of frankincense is extremely hard to source and is considered very rare. We are privileged to be able to offer it to the public, as it has had a long dangerous journey. Our local source has risked his life to travel from Socotra through war-torn Yemen to be able to export this amazing resin.
The Island of Socotra has long been a sacred and mystical place since the times of the Frankincense Trail to present day. Socotra is the jewel of biodiversity in the Arabian Sea; research conducted in the 1990s by a team of United Nations biologists produced a survey of the island's flora and fauna, and they counted nearly 700 endemic species that were found no place else on earth! These species included 6 rare species of frankincense, which include:
· Boswellia ameero
· Boswellia bullata
· Boswellia dioscoridis
· Boswellia popoviana
· Boswellia elongata (BCI has sourced it and offers it!!)
· Boswellia socotrana (BCI has sourced it and offers it!!)
Please see the picture of the map to understand how rare these trees are. The yellow designations are the only places on the island and in the world where the B. Socotrana tree grows.
Socotrana Frankincense has powerful applications in both meditation and local spiritual practices. The explorer, Marco Polo, once wrote in his travelogue:
“I give you my word that the people of this island are the most expert enchanters in the world. They say that their forefathers did these things of old."
Historically, the Phoenicians believed that the nest of the Phoenix, a mythical colorful bird that rises from its own ashes at death and is reborn, was made from frankincense and myrrh trees and was located on the highest peak of Socotra's Haggeher Mountains.
Socotrana offers a light citrusy aroma and subtle earth-tone hints of aromatic woods. This sacred aroma has similar scents of sacra and carteri mixed and its own original complex scents. The color varies from a mix of light brown to amber to white and consists of larger 1" to 0.25" size tears.
Boswellia Socotrana supply is very limited worldwide. This resin is extremely hard to source and therefore costly to obtain; we only have 4 kilograms in stock and do not know if we will ever be able to source it again. We have done our best to offer it at a good price. With its complex aromas that will please the most discerning frankincense connoisseur, it is a must try.
For use with charcoal burners.
